Blog Post #4 - Saint Martin

Saint Martin, also known as Sint Maarten in Dutch and Saint-Martin in French, is located in the northeastern part of the Caribbean. The island was named by Christopher Columbus after St. Martin of Tours. In terms of research material I believe one of the best things to discuss could be the trending of Dutch and Spanish hands a multitude of times. Another thing could be the agriculture of the land, or lack there-of in place of tourism. It would appear that Saint Martin has a wide ranging history regarding its inhabitants, which could allow us to traverse up into modern history. Some things of note would be that Columbus never actually stepped foot on the island and the island was mostly unwanted and untouched other than a brief period in which it was used as an outpost between other islands. In addition, on Saint Martin sugarcane was grown and slaves were used to do so, similarly to other nearby islands. Salt was also something wanted on the island, with the Dutch in 1693 mining for it along Saint Martin. During the “eighty years war” between the Dutch and the Spanish, the island was primarily used as a foothold to other islands. On July 12th, 1848 Slavery was abolished on the island by france, and it is known as Schoelcher’s Day.

  1. Your post is good overall, I enjoyed reading the brief history of how Saint Martin was not seen as a "treasure" by most colonial powers. However, your references have to be in MLA format, not just the links. To do so, you need to cite the publishing date, title of article, author, and a URL, basically the basics you would need. Also, you need to incorporate your actual sources in your text, that way your ideas are supported by the information you used and nobody mistakes your words for plagiarism.

  2. The history of the island was a very interesting read but I think going into a little more detail on the history would help bolster the content of the post, perhaps addressing a little bit of what made the colonizing countries want to expand to the west and the conflicts they had with the other colonizing countries in the area.
